Choosing your tile adhesive

When it comes to buying adhesive for your tiles, the tile size and position will affect the type of adhesive that you choose. A self priming ready mixed adhesive will save you time when it comes to tiling the walls, however, for larger sized wall tiles, you’ll need to mix a powdered adhesive yourself.

While a standard adhesive will suit walls in dry areas with little condensation, in wet environments like the space around the bath or shower, a water-resistant adhesive will ensure that your functional tiles will serve your needs for years to come.

The nature of busy domestic spaces means that all floor adhesive is resistant to water, and with it coming in a powdered format, it’s important to remember that all floor adhesives will need mixing before getting started. And while it’s possible to use non-flexible adhesive on concrete, if you’re tiling over areas where there will be natural movement, such as floor boards, make sure you use a flexible adhesive.

Running out of adhesive while you’re halfway through a tiling project can stunt the progress of your interior design project, so it’s best to be prepared. As a guide, covering approximately 4-5 square metres of wall tiles should take 10 kg of wall adhesive. While the amount of adhesive that you use will depend on how level your floor is, 20 kg of floor adhesive will cover approximately 5 square metres of an average floor.

Finding the right grout

Most surfaces will expand and contract over time, but due to the rigidity of tiles, there needs to be space in between to allow for this movement. Grout is then applied in between each of the tiles, providing a neater aesthetic and preventing water and dirt from filling the gap. Most grout will be water-resistant, but when applying tiles in areas with wetter conditions, such as the bathroom, opting for a waterproof grout or sealing means you can ensure that the grout is stain and mould resistant. In areas with a great amount of movement, a flexible grout may be recommended in comparison to a standard type of grout, so it’s worth considering the characteristics of the material you’ll be laying your tiles on.

From white to black, the wide range of colours will mean that you can either match your grout to your tiles or create a contrast in the interior by daring for completely different tones of grout and tiles. It’s also worth bearing in mind that the smaller your tiles, the more grout you’ll likely use.
