What are ceramic tiles?

Of course, before you dive into picking out your tiles, it’s helpful to know exactly what ceramic tiles are. That way you can be sure you’re making an informed choice from the get-go.

Ceramic tiles have been around for thousands of years, with the earliest forms thought to have originated in Egypt some 25,000 years ago. Over the centuries, they were refined and used across the globe and many original ceramic tiles from bygone eras (such as the Roman Empire) can still be found intact today.

In terms of their growing popularity and availability, we have the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century to thank, as new technology brought the possibility of mass production. This spanned well into the Victorian age, where encaustic ceramic tiles were a key feature in many homes and public buildings.

Fast forward to the 21st century and ceramic tiles remain an extremely popular choice, used predominantly in homes. In principle, the same components and processes of years gone by are still used today to produce them, too.

This type of tile is made from clay and other natural products, which are formed into a shape and then fired in a kiln to solidify. With ceramic tiles, there are often tiny voids within the clay that make them slightly less durable than dense porcelain. This means they’re often not particularly suited to outdoor spaces. But with modern technology and the right grout for sealing, ceramic tiles still make for an exceptionally sturdy flooring and walling option in high-traffic areas of the home.

The benefits of ceramic tiles

Here at Tiles Direct, we ensure that all of our ceramic tiles are produced to the same consistently high quality. This means you can rest assured your ceramic floor and wall tiles will last for decades to come, as all our ceramic tiles are:

Easy to maintain: with dirt and stains all resting on the surface, ceramic tiles are incredibly easy to maintain, requiring nothing more than a simple wipe or regular mop with warm water and a standard cleaning agent. This makes these tiles the ideal walling or flooring solution for busy households, giving you peace of mind that your interior will stay looking its best no matter what’s thrown its way

Durable: ceramic tiles are so easy to maintain thanks to their refined, hard surface. This quality also means ceramic tiles are incredibly durable, making them perfect for floors that experience high levels of footfall. Very unlikely to crack, a quality installation could see these tiles last for hundreds of years undamaged

Hygienic: like most other types of tile, the solid surface of ceramic tiles also means they won’t attract or hold onto dirt, dust or allergens. As a result, this makes them an extremely hygienic and easy-to-clean material for allergy sufferers

Water resistant: impervious to water and stains, ceramic tiles are naturally resistant to high humidity conditions, which means they’re absolutely ideal for traditionally wet rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens

Practical and stylish

It’s not just the extensive practical benefits of ceramic tiles that make them so popular. With a vast choice of colours, shapes, finishes and sizes to choose from, our range is sure to have something to seamlessly complement every type of interior aesthetic.

From classic to contemporary and everything in between, here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

Fashionable floors

Thanks to their long lifespan and diverse appearance, ceramic floor tiles can be used to complement many different interior aesthetics. From wood look to pure white, if you have a vision for your interior, our ceramic floor tiles can help you achieve it.

Introduce a retro feel to your home with our eye-catching Biarritz tiles that use a cross pattern to give floors that wow factor. Or you can keep it classy and classic with some marble-esque ceramic floor tiles

If a more modern and minimalist approach is the order of the day, use large pale grey ceramic tiles or dramatic dark hues - the options are endless! Whichever product you choose, you’re guaranteed a long-lasting ceramic floor tile that will inject bags of style into your home design.

Trendy walls

Because of the sheer range of styles and colours available, ceramic tiles look just as great on walls as they do on floors. Whether you’re redecorating your bathroom, bedroom or kitchen, you can use your ceramic wall tiles to perfect your desired interior design with ease - and one trick is to play around with different tile finishes.

For a subtle and chic finish, why not try ceramic wall tiles with a matt or tactile textured finish? Alternatively, if you prefer smooth, shiny walls that reflect light around the room, polished finishes like those in our glossy mosaic tiles collection could be the way to go.

For a timeless take on a modern trend, hexagonal ceramic mosaic tiles can bring a new dynamic into a dull space, while our realistic Carrara marble-look ceramic tiles create a truly elegant aesthetic. Alternatively, bring the Manhattan loft look into your home with timelessly trendy metro ceramic kitchen tiles, or enhance your space with dark Cosmos Lux tiles to give rooms a sophisticated edge.

Versatility for every room

Because of the refined practicality and flexible aesthetics offered by our range of ceramic tiles, you can be sure you’ll find an effective walling or flooring solution for every room in the home.

In the bathroom

Tiles and bathrooms are a match made in heaven. With a durable, water-resistant and easy-to-clean surface, ceramic tiles are right at home thanks to their outstanding level of practicality and good looks.

Opt for a classic, pure design by installing white ceramic floor tiles and then pairing these up with decorative ceramic wall tiles. You can mix and match different Artesano coloured wall tiles, for example, to bring a splash of colour and flair into your bathroom. Alternatively, the Vives ceramic tile range is packed with vintage-tinged ceramic floor tiles for bathrooms, contrasting beautifully against white walls.

In the kitchen

Thanks to the range of qualities discussed above, ceramic tiles provide a functional splashback solution for kitchen backdrops, where spillages can be wiped away with ease. Not only that, but with a variety of different colours that range from dark red to crisp white, not to mention a variety of retro designs to choose from. This includes classic white border tiles that can be the perfect finishing touch to shoulder-height splashbacks as they provide a visually striking, distinction between upper and lower walls.

If fuss-free kitchen design is more your style, sleek Metal White wall tiles laid vertically and paired with dark grey floor tiles delivers a cool and clean finish. Or use patterns on walls or floors to bring some character to this typically functional space, like curvy shell mosaics for splashbacks that give off an Art Deco feel or ornate patterned floor tiles with vintage vibes.

In the hallway

As the first point of entry into your home, why not look to make an interior statement with a feature wall or eye-catching floor in your hallway? With an array of visually striking patterns like our Pebble Multicolour ceramic tiles, let your creativity run wild to add a unique finish to your walls.

If you’re looking for a more traditional home interior for a period property, pretty Victorian-style ceramic tiles are the perfect match. Featuring intricate patterns and bona fide colours, these tiles beautifully capture the essence of a bygone era to give your floors an authentic and striking finish.

In the bedroom

The bedroom may not be an obvious room to consider when it comes to tiles, but they can in fact bring a wonderful depth and texture. With such a large choice of colours, patterns and shapes available, there’s no reason not to look to mix up your bedroom interior with ceramic wall or floor tiles. Consider tiling around your headboard for a statement backdrop that really expresses you, or use wood-effect floor tiles to create a warm and inviting ambience.

In the living room

As the social hub of most homes, having practical flooring in your living room can be beneficial. For a timeless choice, natural stone look ceramic tiles will always look effortlessly on-trend and can be updated with accessories like floor rugs and soft furnishings with ease.

Floors aren’t your only option for using ceramic tiles in living rooms - your walls also offer the perfect canvas for getting creative. From ornate fireplace tiles to funky white 3D tiles, there are so many ways to make a standout living room feature wall using ceramic wall tiles.

No matter your choice of ceramic tile, you can be guaranteed they’ll add style to the room and stay in great condition for years to come.

Installing ceramic tiles

When it comes to installing ceramic tiles, we’d always suggest seeking the help of a reputable tiler to ensure you get the professional finish you deserve. However, if you do want to take the job on yourself, here are a few pointers to get you started.

Measure your area: before you even begin to think about buying or laying tiles, you need to ensure your measurements are absolutely spot on. To work out the amount of tiles you’ll need in square meters, simply multiply the length by width. From here you can calculate how many tiles you need to buy, allowing a minimum of 10% extra to cover off any breakages and tile cuts. If this sounds too complicated, we’ll do the maths for you, as all our product pages feature an online tile calculator that will tell you how many you’ll need and the price.

Prep the area: as with any DIY job, you’ll need to prep the area before you start laying your tiles. For both walls and floors, you’ll need to make sure the surface is flat and clean. You can tile directly onto existing surfaces such as wood, concrete and tiles, but in some instances, you may be best to apply new plasterboard or a screed to floors to seal the substrate (surface in the trade) and make it level.

Plan out your design: with your surface prepped, the next step is to plan out your ceramic tile design before fixing them permanently. This will allow you to calculate the number of cuts needed and play around with positioning to get the perfect pattern. Check out our tile layout guide for some inspiration.

Fix your tiles: next, you need to mix some adhesive and begin installing your ceramic tiles to the wall or floor. Before you start, for floors you’ll need to find the area's centre point, laying your first tile here and working outwards to each corner. When it comes to walls, you should start on the closest row, using a batten to find the true level and tile upwards one row at a time.

Always apply a small amount of adhesive at any one time using a notched trowel, then use tile spacers between each tile once they’re in place to keep your lines straight and even.

Finish with grout: after your adhesive has dried (usually allow 24 hours for this), you can finish your ceramic tiles with grout to seal between the gaps. Apply the solution using a grout flow, taking your time to fill each gap evenly.
