The Rise of Coloured Grout
Just as the choice of tile types, colours and sizes has increased, so too has the choice of grout colours. Gone are the days when you were restricted to white, grey and beige – there’s now a broad spectrum of colours available, including even sparkly grouts for some added glamour.
In this post, we’ll be exploring the increased use of coloured grout, and the versatility it can bring to a tiled area. From adding a splash of colour in all-white interiors to accentuating small tiles with contrasting tones, we’ve got plenty of ideas on how to use coloured grout to create a striking aesthetic.
All-white with a twist

A white interior is a classic choice that works brilliantly in any area of your home, making even the smallest of spaces feel light and airy. However, there are times when a purely white aesthetic runs the risk of becoming bland or stark, especially with white wall tiles and white grout combined. Luckily, this can be remedied easily if you allow yourself to get creative with wall tiles, using coloured grout to add interest. One increasingly popular option is to finish large white wall tiles with a coloured grout in a light grey, cream or pale pastel colour – the subtle colour contrast is sure to make your wall tiles stand out with a contemporary feel.
Another option is to use smaller tiles, like metro wall tiles, which have bags of scope, with bolder colours like dark greys, bright reds and blues. This can be a great way to give the tiles more definition and create an industrial or rustic aesthetic – or alternatively, you can team them up with off-white or pale brown grouts for a softer definition and vintage-style aesthetic.
Wonderful wood shades

Wood-effect tiles are becoming increasingly popular as a more durable, affordable and easy-to-maintain alternative to real wood flooring – and there are plenty of ways you can use coloured grout to accentuate this aesthetic and complement your wood-look tiles. Whether you want to create a rustic vibe with wood-effect kitchen tiles or a warm, tactile feature wall in your living room, you’re sure to find the perfect colour to either define the tiles or blend them together to achieve an authentic wooden look. These colours will also work beautifully with natural stone tiles to enhance their different tones and textures.
Colour coordination
With more people embracing coloured or patterned kitchen and bathroom tiles, there’s also been an increase in the use of coloured grouts to make wall tiles really pop. Using a coloured grout in a similar shade to the tile or pattern, as opposed to plain white, can be a great way to tie everything together, while also giving definition to the tiles – just be careful not to choose a colour that will clash.
Added benefits of coloured grout
From adding interest to plain walls to accentuating tiles and blending colours, there are numerous reasons to go for a coloured grout – but one important practical aspect is the fact that coloured grout can stay looking cleaner for longer than a standard white – which is always a bonus!
