The Spring Cleaning Guide: Easy Tips For A Fresh Interior

The clocks have gone forward, the evenings are getting lighter and the flowers are beginning to bloom.

For many, the first signs of spring bring with them a newfound positivity for the outside world. But for many homeowners, the emergence of spring means two dreaded words – spring clean.

But the spring clean doesn’t have to be feared. On the contrary, with the right spring cleaning ideas, this tiresome chore can become a great way to spend the day, embracing all the freshness and optimism that spring throws your way.

That’s why, in today’s post, we’re sharing some easy spring cleaning tips that you can apply to your own spring cleaning routine, breathing a new lease of life into your interior for the warmer, sunnier months ahead.

Why spring clean?

Much like the spring season’s revitalisation of the natural world, a spring clean provides you with the opportunity to once again embrace freshness, airiness and natural light in your interior.

Following the cold and dark of the winter months, your spring cleaning ideas should adopt the mantra of ‘fresh interior, fresh mind’. By reviving your interior through a thorough cleaning process, you’re closing the book on winter and championing that newfangled positivity in the air.

Practically, it’s also a good opportunity to make sure you’re keeping on top of your maintenance routines, ensuring your interior remains primed for longevity, safety and unrivalled aesthetics.

When to start your spring clean

The obvious answer – spring!

As we’ve touched upon already, your spring clean should look to embrace the freshness of the season. So, look to start your spring clean when you first sense spring in the air – such as when you first throw the windows open, for example.

It’s important not to understate the size of the task at hand. More often than not, it’s going to take a day or two to give each room of your home the TLC it deserves. Block off a weekend to ensure a squeaky clean interior that’s season-ready.

3 quick spring cleaning hacks

While there’s no home like a clean home, we understand that the prospect of an entire spring clean is often a daunting task. Whether it’s the amount of cleaning to do or the time it will take to do it, you need to be in the right frame of mind to avoid inevitable procrastination.

Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here are 3 quick spring cleaning ideas that can help you get organised, prepped and ready for the ultimate clean:

1. Start with whole-house tasks

To get a real sense of productivity from the off, start with those tasks that are spread across multiple rooms – think cleaning windows or washing bedding, for example. By touching multiple rooms in your first sweep, you’ll feel a sense of productive motivation that sets you up for the rest of the clean.

2. Tackle unpopular tasks

You’re gonna have to face them sooner or later!

From deep cleaning the toilet to scrubbing the oven, there are some tasks that nobody enjoys doing. But putting these to the bottom of your list is a one-way ticket to procrastination.

Instead, get them done early. Not only will this give you a great sense of accomplishment, but you’ll also thank yourself for it at the end of day 2 – after all, who wants to clean an over after two days of cleaning?!

3. Work out your timetable

With so much to cover, some tasks are naturally going to take longer than others. With this in mind, keeping a rough rota is one of our favourite spring cleaning tips.

This doesn’t have to be planned down to the second. Instead, think more generally about which tasks require ‘hands-on time’ and which don’t. For example, washing the bedding doesn’t require you to stand by your washing machine for hours, so why not put the wash on at the start of the day and crack on with other tasks?

Our easy spring cleaning tips

When it comes to the nitty-gritty of your spring clean, we’ve got plenty of useful spring cleaning ideas to help you on your way.

The living room

As a social hub of any home, the living room has one major enemy: dust. And the biggest dust magnets of all? Curtains.

Don’t underestimate the effect a proper curtain clean can have on drastically improving air quality in your living room. While in some instances you can vacuum or steam your curtains while they hang, it’s best to remove them from their rods to launder.

Elsewhere, take the opportunity to bring the colour and crispness back to your carpet. To do this, we recommend hiring a dedicated carpet cleaner as opposed to a regular vacuum.

The kitchen

As the busiest room of any home, the kitchen receives its fair share of splashes, spills and stains.

So, be sure to give each element of your kitchen the care and attention it deserves. Start with your surfaces, wiping down all cabinets and countertops with an effective but non-damaging cleaning solution. If your countertops need sealing, this is a good time to consider applying a fresh sealing coat. To test, simply pour a little water on your surface – if the water doesn’t bead up, it’s time to reseal!

Next, tackle your appliances. Leave no stone unturned here and clean anything and everything, from coffee machines and blenders to microwaves and kettles! Be sure to include those main appliances too – for fridges and ovens, ensuring this is done thoroughly is the key to ensuring sanitation and longevity.

Lastly, face up to your floors. Whether you’ve opted for wooden panels or floor tiles, be conscious of remaining delicate to the material – we recommend mops and sponges combined with a neutral cleaning agent to avoid any risk of scratching.

The bathroom

Much like your kitchen, your bathroom is often subject to a good deal of wear and tear. So, it’s important to deal with this space using the right tools and the right approach.

Starting with your bathtub or shower, pay particular focus to water lines, tracks and soap scum. In instances where these are proving extra resistant, restore sparkle by using homemade cleaning agents such as water, baking soda and white vinegar.

It’s likely that tiles feature on your walls or floors (if not both!). To give them the care they deserve, pay attention to dust, dirt and bacteria. This means more than simply focusing on the tile surface, however. Don’t forget to show the grout a little bit of love to ensure complete cleanliness and to restore any walling or flooring to its former glory.

The bedroom

Last but by no means least, the bedroom.

Whilst your bedding is in the wash, first turn your attention to your mattress. Sprinkle with baking soda, and then slowly vacuum with the most appropriate brush attachment. Be sure to reach the tops and bottoms of the seam that encircles your mattress, and rotate/flip where necessary!

Next, tackle your blinds or shutters. Just like curtains, these can be major dust magnets when not regularly attended to. Use a soft, microfibre duster and follow-up with a slightly damp dust rag and a lint roller – this combination will tackle both dust and grime effectively. The ultimate win-win!

Lastly, don’t forget about your closet or wardrobe. And we don’t just mean wiping down the doors! Use the emergence of spring as your excuse to refresh your wardrobe, being sure to reorganise and declutter as you go!
